Wild New Zealand

10 day tour of the Southland — October 2016

Kaikoura Coast

We arrived in Kaikoura almost exactly one month before a devastating earthquake struck the town. We were staying in a log cabin at a place called Lavender Farm, a short drive inland. I had no idea when we arrived if we’d get the chance to see whales or dolphins on our loop of the South Island, and since only a single boat seemed to be operating from the harbour and we only had a day, Joel and I jumped at it. We were very lucky, and were rewarded with a sighting of the largest pod of wild dusky dolphins our guide had ever seen.
